SICA03i Porsche 962C LH #9 Le Mans 1990 ‘Mizuno’

PRICE ROLLBACK on select Slot.it Cars

The Porsche 962 was a sport-prototype racing car created to replace the already successful Porsche 956, in order to allow Porsche to race in the Americans IMSA and WSC Group C competitions. It was one of the most successful racing cars ever and it won several competitions all over the world:

• – World Sport-Prototype Championship in 1985/86
• – 24h Le Mans in 1986/87 and 1994
• – IMSA GTP Championship in 1985/86/87/88
• – 24h Daytona in 1985/86/87, 1989 and 1991
• – 12h Sebring in 1985/86/87/88

The engine was a boxer, 6 cylinders, with two turbos, liquid-cooled, 4 valves per cylinder, double overhead camshaft. On the 3 factory cars entered in the ’24 Hours’ in 1988, displacement had been increased to 3 liters. In those years, cars used ‘long’ shaped tails to have the less possible drag on the ‘Les Hunaudières’ straight. During qualifying, the works 962C reached a maximum speed of 391 kph. This car raced at Le Mans in 1990 in the blue and white livery of sponsor Mizuno and was driven by Louis Krages, Stanley Dickens, Bob Wollek.

Slot It SICA35D Alfa Romeo 155 V6 T1 ‘Castrol’ n.26, Nurburgring DTM 1994, driver Carsten Struwe

PRICE ROLLBACK on select Slot.it Cars

The Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI is a racing car built to race in the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft) series in 1993. At that time the German Touring Car Championship was the peak of technology for touring car racing, and it reserved for cars of Class 1 (first division or D1). The rules mandated cars with an engine displacement of 2.5 liters and 6 cylinders at most, derived from approved models and produced in no less than 25,000 units. The rules allowed deep changes to the car, provided that the external lines were maintained.
When Alfa Romeo introduced its 420 bhp, four-wheel drive 155, the more conventional rear-wheel drive Mercedes 190 couldn’t matched Alfa’s performance. In 1993, the Italian car dominated the category, winning 12 races out of 20 with its the two factory drivers, thus winning both drivers and constructors titles. To date, the Alfa Romeo 155 is the only non-German car to have won a DTM championship.

This Maserati 250F is likely to be the most desirable of all the Scalextric 60th Anniversary cars because it is (by chance) painted in the official United States of America blue on white racing colors. It is the seventh (of seven) cars in the Limited Edition Scalextric 60th Anniversary series. We found a few of five of the first six (C3827A is sold out) so you can have yours if you order now.

Scalextric C3825A 60th Anniversary Coll. no.7 – 1950s, Maserati 250F Limited Edition

Scalextric 60th Anniversary Collection – 1950s, Maserati 250F Limited Edition

Launched in 1957, Scalextric was the brain child of Bertram ‘Fred’ Francis, the talented inventor behind a range of mechanical tin toys. The first Scalextric cars were tin too and powered by a small electric motor, instead of the more common clockwork cars of the time. This new toy took off and by 1958 Francis had sold his idea to Tri-ang, who looked to invest. Tri-ang produced newer cars in plastic and the range of vehicles offered started to expand.
The very first car released by Scalextric in 1957 was the Maserati 250F, then the car to have in Grand Prix racing with Juan Manuel Fangio scoring his legendary final win in one at the 1957 German Grand Prix. In this race he overcome a 48 second deficit in just 22 laps and broke the lap record 10 times in one race. The very first Scalextric set featured two of these cars and perfectly captured both the glamour and beauty of motor racing cars of the period. The 250F was phased out of F1 racing shortly afterwards, but remains one of the most iconic and beautiful F1 cars of all time, a shining testament to the bravery of the early F1 World Championship competitors.

Scalextric C3826A 60th Anniversary Collection no. 6-1960s, Jaguar E-Type LimitedEd.

Scalextric C3826A 60th Anniversary Collection – 1960s, Jaguar E-type Limited Edition

Despite being debuted in the 1950s, it was the 60s that really saw Scalextric come to prominence as one of the best known toys across the globe. With countless new cars, from the Ferrari 250SWB and Jaguar E-type, right down to Go-Karts and the humble Mini; Scalextric had a car for everyone to race at home. Countless accessory buildings and track pieces were added and the range blossomed, with superstars like the Beatles even having a go! But the celebrity endorsements were not limited to pop stars, Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Various other racing drivers of the era all had their own Scalextric sets.

No other car symbolises the swinging sixties quite like the Jaguar E-type, manufactured by Jaguar Cars Ltd between 1961 and 1975 its combination of beauty, high performance and competitive pricing established the marque as an icon of 1960s motoring. On its release Enzo Ferrari called it “The most beautiful car ever made”, the Lightweight was also very successful on track and in smaller races with Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori seeing the top step of the podium in E-types. In Australia Bob Jane won the 1963 Australian GT Championship in an E-type Lightweight and even today it continues to be a force to be reckoned with in classic GT racing around the world.

Scalextric C3829A 60th Anniversary Collection no.4-1990s, BMW E30 M3 Limited Ed.

Scalextric C3829A 60th Anniversary Collection – 1990s, BMW E30 M3 Limited Edition

As Scalextric moved into the 1990s it followed another shift in motorsport. Throughout the 1980s rallying and Group B had dominated the airwaves and press, but as that declined, touring car racing, most notably Super Touring, took its place. As the BTCC, DTM and other national series gained in popularity, Scalextric began producing these cars.

One manufacturer above others dominated this form of motorsport, BMW. Although production of the BMW M3 E30 started in the ‘80s it saw considerable success in the early ‘90s, winning the BTCC title in 1990 and 1991, along with numerous DTM, Italia Superturismo Championships and Australian races. It also enjoyed considerable success in the rally category.

As the decade moved on, the BMW M3 E30 was to be found racing in lesser series and is even now a common club racing saloon car; as well as being an icon all other performance saloons aspire to. Other new items introduced in the ‘90s by Scalextric were the horse racing sets, as well as various cars driven by the greats of the era: Senna, Schumacher and Hill, all immortalised by Scalextric. With design moving to CAD rather than pattern making and 2D drawing, Scalextric was rapidly accelerating towards the 21st century.

Scalextric C3828A 60th Anniversary no. 3-1980s, Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 Limited Ed.

Scalextric 60th Anniversary Collection – 1980s, Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 Limited Edition

First issued in 1984 the original Scalextric Audi Quattro proved to be as big a hit on the Scalextric tracks of the nation as the original had been screaming through Scandinavian forests. The 1980s saw Scalextric move into ever more inventive areas, with items such as ‘Blowout!’ and Racing Rigs bringing new excitement to the brand. Group B rally cars featured heavily as Ayrton Senna made his Scalextric debut towards the end of the decade in a JPS Lotus, alongside Mansell in a Williams.

The Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 itself was introduced at the end of the 1985 as an update to the Audi Sport quattro; with the car sporting an inline turbo charged 5-cylinder engine. In addition to the improved power output, an aggressive aerodynamic kit was added that featured very distinctive wings and spoilers to the front and rear of the car to increase downforce. The S1 E2 did find some success with Walter Röhrl and Christian Geistdörfer winning the 1985 San Remo Rally, but with the Group B era coming to an end in 1986 after a series of tragic incidents, the quattro was consigned first to the Rallycross tracks, and then the history books.

Making its competitive debut at the 2013 Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi on 13th December 2013, many scoffed that a car the size of the Continental would be successful but it has proved to bean amazing car, powerful and well handling it is still one of the best cars in its class. The Abu Dhabi race would mark Bentleys return to motorsport ten years after its dominant win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2003 and as of now the car continues to win in the Blancpain GT sprint and Endurance series, British GT, GT Cup and on many Scalextric layouts across the world.

This is the first car in the 60th Anniveary series. The second car is Scalextric C3830A 60th Anniversary Collection Car no.2- 2000s, Aston Martin DBR9 Limited Edition
