Scalextric C3001 1970 Camaro, Warren Agor (C)

1/32 scale slot car. Ready to run on all 1/32 scale non-digital slot car tracks. Digital plug ready. Accepts C8515 plug-in digital chip. 1970 Camaro #13, as driven by Warren Agor. This car is believed to be the third Chaparral factory team car that Chevrolet gave Jim Hall to build into a race car.

After leaving the Penske Racing team in 1968, Warren Agor formed Agor Racing Enterprises. As a race car owner, builder, and driver he set many track records and won numerous SCCA and IMSA races including the 25th Trans-Am race victory for the Chevrolet Camaro at Sanair International raceway in Canada (the only race track in the world with a name that sounds like the naming rights have been bought by a garbage collection company or a room deodorizer manufacturer). Agor, of Rochester, New York, bought the car from Marshall Robbins in late 1971. He changed the color to Hugger Orange and the number to 13. Hoselton Chevrolet sponsored the car for the three years that Agor drove it. At the time of his retirement from racing in 1973, he had accumulated more points than any then-active professional driver participating in the Trans-Am series. Agor now runs a company providing mobility solutions for the disabled.

Best Finishes for Warren Agor
1972 Lime Rock, 2nd: Bryar, 3rd: Mid-Ohio, 3rd
1973 Daytona, 2nd: Sanair, 1st: Road America, 2nd Fastest Trans-Am lap record of 2.25, 99 mph, which was held into the ‘80’s

The third and fourth cars in the Limited Edition Scalextric 60th Anniversary series are here. They only made a few, so order yours now.

Scalextric C3828A 60th Anniversary no. 3-1980s, Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 Limited Ed.

Scalextric 60th Anniversary Collection – 1980s, Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 Limited Edition First issued in 1984 the original Scalextric Audi Quattro proved to be as big a hit on the Scalextric tracks of the nation as the original had been screaming through Scandinavian forests. The 1980s saw Scalextric move into ever more inventive areas, with items such as ‘Blowout!’ and Racing Rigs bringing new excitement to the brand. Group B rally cars featured heavily as Ayrton Senna made his Scalextric debut towards the end of the decade in a JPS Lotus, alongside Mansell in a Williams.

The Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 itself was introduced at the end of the 1985 as an update to the Audi Sport quattro; with the car sporting an inline turbo charged 5-cylinder engine. In addition to the improved power output, an aggressive aerodynamic kit was added that featured very distinctive wings and spoilers to the front and rear of the car to increase downforce. The S1 E2 did find some success with Walter Röhrl and Christian Geistdörfer winning the 1985 San Remo Rally, but with the Group B era coming to an end in 1986 after a series of tragic incidents, the quattro was consigned first to the Rallycross tracks, and then the history books.

Scalextric C3829A 60th Anniversary Collection no.4-1990s, BMW E30 M3 Limited Ed.

Scalextric C3829A 60th Anniversary Collection – 1990s, BMW E30 M3 Limited Edition

As Scalextric moved into the 1990s it followed another shift in motorsport. Throughout the 1980s rallying and Group B had dominated the airwaves and press, but as that declined, touring car racing, most notably Super Touring, took its place. As the BTCC, DTM and other national series gained in popularity, Scalextric began producing these cars.

One manufacturer above others dominated this form of motorsport, BMW. Although production of the BMW M3 E30 started in the ‘80s it saw considerable success in the early ‘90s, winning the BTCC title in 1990 and 1991, along with numerous DTM, Italia Superturismo Championships and Australian races. It also enjoyed considerable success in the rally category.

As the decade moved on, the BMW M3 E30 was to be found racing in lesser series and is even now a common club racing saloon car; as well as being an icon all other performance saloons aspire to. Other new items introduced in the ‘90s by Scalextric were the horse racing sets, as well as various cars driven by the greats of the era: Senna, Schumacher and Hill, all immortalised by Scalextric. With design moving to CAD rather than pattern making and 2D drawing, Scalextric was rapidly accelerating towards the 21st century.

Four more slot cars from the 2017 Scalextric line are here now, including the cartoon deco VW Campervan.

Scalextric C3891 Volkswagen Campervan

To ferry parts across the massive VW factory, stripped down Beetles were turned into “transporters”. Ben Pon, a Dutch VW importer, thought this was a great idea and in 1947 sketched his idea of a Beetle based van. Two years later it was launched at the Geneva Motor Show as the modern equivalent to the horse and cart.

Scalextric C3877 McLaren P1, Grey

The McLaren P1 is a limited production plug-in hybrid sports car by British manufacturer McLaren Automotive. The concept car debuted at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. Deliveries to retail customers began in the UK in October 2013. The entire P1 production of 375 units was sold out by November 2013. The production run ended in December 2015. It is considered to be the long-awaited successor to the McLaren F1, utilizing hybrid power and Formula 1 technology. It does not have the same three seat layout as its predecessor. The design of the headlights is very similar to the shape of the McLaren logo. Just like the McLaren F1 road car of 1992, the McLaren P1 is a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive design that uses a carbon fibre monocoque and roof structure safety cage concept called MonoCage, which is a development of the MonoCell used in the current MP4-12C and MP4-12C Spider upgrade that came out in early 2012.

All six of the Gulf Team mechanics and driver Jackie Ickx are here to populate your pit scenes. Each is hand-painted cast resin.

FLM132020 Jacky Ickx.

There is no more famous endurance racing driver than Jacky Ickx. With 6 LeMans victories he is a legendary figure in motorsports history. He is modeled here as he looked when he won his first LeMans victory in 1969. Yes, we know that’s not the correct car for the occasion and yes, we know his name is properly spelled “Jacky”, not “Jackie”, and so does LMM. He was wearing a driving unifom on which the name had been embriodered incorrectly… so don’t e-mail us.

Scalextric has finalized the paint scheme on the seventh (and final) car in their 60th anniversary series. You’ll want them all (the C3826A E-Type Jaguar and C3827A Lancia Stratos are also coming this fall) and this 250F Maserati is likely to be the most desirable because it is (by chance) painted in the official United States of America blue on white racing colors. It is due in October so you can pre-order it now.

Scalextric C3825A 60th Anniversary Collection – 1950s, Maserati 250F Limited Edition—PRE-ORDER NOW

Scalextric 60th Anniversary Collection – 1950s, Maserati 250F Limited Edition

Launched in 1957, Scalextric was the brain child of Bertram ‘Fred’ Francis, the talented inventor behind a range of mechanical tin toys. The first Scalextric cars were tin too and powered by a small electric motor, instead of the more common clockwork cars of the time. This new toy took off and by 1958 Francis had sold his idea to Tri-ang, who looked to invest. Tri-ang produced newer cars in plastic and the range of vehicles offered started to expand.

The very first car released by Scalextric in 1957 was the Maserati 250F, then the car to have in Grand Prix racing with Juan Manuel Fangio scoring his legendary final win in one at the 1957 German Grand Prix. In this race he overcome a 48 second deficit in just 22 laps and broke the lap record 10 times in one race. The very first Scalextric set featured two of these cars and perfectly captured both the glamour and beauty of motor racing cars of the period. The 250F was phased out of F1 racing shortly afterwards, but remains one of the most iconic and beautiful F1 cars of all time, a shining testament to the bravery of the early F1 World Championship competitors.

MRRC MC0051 Porsche 910 launch model 1967

This car uses the MRRC/Monogram Sebring chassis. The Sebring chassis is an excellent universal 1/32 scale chassis for use with body kits and for kitbashig and scratchbuilding projects. It can be set up to handle well in both magnet and non-magnet racing. It has an adjustable wheelbase and is compact enough to fit almost any sports car, GT, or sedan body and to allow the use of wide wheels ad tires within even a relatively modest body width.

MRRC and Monogram cars using the Sebring chassis come with a variety of different wheels and tires. All of them use the same “slimline” motor which provides more than enough power for most home and club racing. They are ideal “donor cars” to provide a complete running chassis for the body of your choice at a cost often lower than purchasing the needed components separately.

Scalextric C3741 Ford XC Falcon – 1978 Bathurst 1000

Race: 1978 Hardie-Ferodo 1000

Driver: Allan Moffat & Jacky Ickx

Pushing for more television time, the 1978 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 saw the introduction of the Hardies Heroes Top 10 runoff for pole position. Rain in the morning meant the track was damp during the first run, which was certainly reflected in the times. That was until Allan Moffat went out and, ignoring the puddles, ran a time six seconds faster than anyone else (while hitting 159 mph on Conrod Straight).

Moffat was eventually pushed back to third and, unfortunately, the race didn’t go as planned. Allan was forced to retire on lap 81, allowing rival Peter Brock to take the victory.

Held on the 1st October at Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst, the race was won by Dick Johnson and John Bowe of Dick Johnson Racing. Scalextric C3696 Legends Ford XY GT-HO Falcon, 1972 Bathurst

Rain was very much the theme for the 1972 Bathurst. John Goss sat behind the wheel of the Ford Falcon and, in practice, set the fastest lap time before blowing an engine. On the race day, with the engine changed, the rain continued to pour, which was unfortunate for the Falcons as they were not suited to driving in wet conditions. As the rain eased a dry line started to appear. Goss pushed the Falcon to its limit and started to close the gap to the cars ahead. Luck though, was not on Goss’s or the Falcon’s side when on lap 24 the strain on the car got too much and the engine blew for a second time.

Carrera 30775 Ferrari 365 P2 “No.01″, Winner Kyalami 9h 1965

What a great time it was when the legendary British racing drivers David Piper and Richard Atwood claimed victory in the Kyalami 9-hour race! Their victorious ride, the Ferrari 365 P2, has also become a legend in its own right. In 1965 the juicy green classic with its 4.4-litre, V12 engine was considered the ultimate sports car. While filming for “Le Mans” Piper crashed in his Porsche and lost part of his leg. However, Piper could never kick the racing habit and being a motor racing legend he saw no reason to take it easier: To this day David Piper has remained a rock-solid Ferrari enthusiast, running his own small-scale workshop in Surrey in which he has already built three complete Ferrari 330P4 replicas.

Down Under Delta Wing

We recently reported that Avant Slot is developing a slot racing model of the Delta Wing car that competed at LeMans. Some hobbyists, however, are not waiting for that project to bear fruit. Customer Andy Whyte of Australia sends us photos of his resin-bodied Delta Wing in 1/32 scale.

He writes:

With reference to your recent email showing the fascinating Avant prototype Nissan Delatawing, I have made my own version using an extensively lightened AA 1/32 resin body from the UK and a modified Scalextric F1 chassis with an F130 motor, NSR tyres all around and decals from Pattos Place, Australia. As I used mainly parts from my spares ” bin “, the total cost was $50.

You will see from the chassis view that I used a single brass bearing held by a portion of an old plastic chassis which was then bonded with Araldite into the resin body. This supports a small length of 3/32 axle to which both front wheels are attached.

I thought long and hard over the guide position and came up with the same solution as Avant. It handles well but is not very forgiving when on the limit. An alternative would be a TSRF pin-guide in front of the front wheels- there should be room!

Nice work, Andy! Thanks for sending us these photos.

We welcome submissions like this from our readers. If you have a scratchbuilt, kitbashed, repainted, or otherwise unique slot car you would like to see featured in our newsletter we invite you to send photos and a description of your car to support@electricdreams.com.

New wheel insert product line

Electric Dreams is now carrying the EZ-Mag line of injection-molded plastic wheel inserts for 1/2″ and 5/8″ i.d. wheels. Because they are injection-molded plastic, not resin-cast, you can wash them before painting with ordinary soap and water. You don’t have to scrub them to a farethewell to get resin-casting mold release agent off. EZ-Mag inserts come in several styles, molded in your choice of black or silver. You can see our selection of these inserts here.

Vintage NASCAR at America’s Car Museum

A member of the Electric Dream team got a day at ACM, aka the LeMay Museum, as a Fathers’ Day gift. One of the exhibits was a collection of historic NASCAR stock cars. Here are some of the photos he took…

A 55 Chevy prepared by none other than the legendary Smokey Yunick.

This is a replica of a 56 Ford convertible raced by Curtis Turner. At one time the convertibles we a popular division of NASCAR. Note that back then they raced these cars with all the chrome trim in place. They really were, for the most part, stock cars.

A 66 Chevy Impala raced by Roy Mayne. For part of his driving career he was a US Army officer who managed to arrange his duty schedule so he could go to races.

A couple of Richard Petty cars, a 70s Oldsmobile and a 90s Pontiac.

Another 70s car, this one driven by Bobby Allison.

Allison also drove this Ford.

No wonder drafting worked so well back in those days. Can you imagine the hole this squared-off body style punched through the air? A lot of the 70s cars could be mistaken for packing boxes for today’s cars. Notice, also, how few decals many of these cars had on them. The days of live network TV, megadollar corporate sponsorships and rolling billboards were still in the future.

America’s Car Museum is a must-see for any car enthusiast. If you ever find yourself in the Seattle/Tacoma, Washington area make time to tour its multiple levels featuring cars of all kinds on display. It will be well worth your time. Visit the ACM web site at http://www.lemaymuseum.org for more information.

And speaking of the museum, its management has been interested from the beginning in holding slot car racing events as an ongoing part of its overall program. We are told that the first of these, a race for 1/32 scale TransAm cars, will be announced shortly. The scheduled date will be October 18-19, 2013. Both in-person and mail-in entries will be accepted with a local slot racing club managing the racing of the mail-in entries. Watch for an official announcement with full information to appear on the various slot car web sites and on the museum’s site before the end of this month.

Pioneer Models update

We’ve all been waiting for hard news about the future plans of Pioneer Models, which has been going through a long, difficult process of establishing its own factory after having too many bad experiences with contractor factories in China.   We have it on good authority from Pioneer USA that the first shipments of cars from the new factory are expected to arrive on these shores sometime in October..  These should be the first of the new and much anticipated Camaro models.  Pioneer says that with the entire manufacturing process under its own control, from initial research to final distribution it will be able to bring out new models much more quickly.  The Legends cars and the 1971 Javelin are expected to follow the Camaro in rapid succession.  Meanwhile, Pioneer is now showing on its web site the first official drawing of the Chevy Legends car.

We will pass on to you any additional information as we receive it.  For now, however, the end of the long drought of Pioneer cars is in sight, for which we can all rejoice.  Electric Dreams wishes Julian Birley and all the gang at Pioneer all success and we congratulate them upon the imminent completion of their new factory.

New NSR 2mm axles, bushings, and gears.

NSR has released and we have received 2mm diameter axles along with bushings and spacers to fit them.  Apparently, the level of competition in European racing has reached the point where reducing the axle diameter by .4mm or so is worth the effort for even the tiny incremental weight reduction this allows.  NSR has also released a line of very lightweight plastic spur gears with metal hubs for both 2mm and 3/32″ axles, but there have been immediate reports of these gears failing due to improper design.  We received a shipment of these gears but we will not be putting them on line for sale until we are certain the problem is resolved.  We may end up returning all of them for replacement with improved gears.

The Electric Dreams Top 40

Part 4 – The Top Ten!

Scalextric C2711 Jaguar XKR TransAm, Paul Gentilozzi

No. 10.  Scalextric C2711 Jaguar XKR TransAm, Paul Gentilozzi.  The first of the Scalextric TA Jaguars and arguably the best looking of the lot.  The chassis also makes a great kitbashing platform.

Scalextric C2605

No. 9. Scalextric C2605 NASCAR Chevy Monte Carlo, all white.  All-white cars are perennial good sellers because of the ease with which custom-painters can use them in creating their own masterpieces.

Scalextric C2896 1970 Camaro TransAm car, Jim Hall / Vic Elford

No. 8. Scalextric C2896 1970 Camaro TransAm car, Jim Hall / Vic Elford.  The classic TransAm series and the Chaparral legend combine to create an irresistible American racing icon.   The graphics on this car epitomize the liveries of the era.

Autoart 13571 Jaguar C-Type, 1953 LeMans winner

No. 7.  Autoart 13571 Jaguar C-Type, 1953 LeMans winner.  There is nothing like a 50s sports car for sheer grace of form.  Back then body design was as much an art as a science, if not more so.  Race cars have been getting progressively uglier ever since race car constructors discovered wind tunnels.

Carrera 20206 Ferrari 330P4, 2nd place LeMans 1967

No. 6.  Carrera 20206 Ferrari 330P4, 2nd place LeMans 1967.  If this car doesn’t have the most sensuous body shape ever put on a race car it must surely be on a very short list of candidates.  And as a protagonist in the epic Ford-Ferrari battles at LeMans in 1966-67 it is the essence of motor sports history.

Scalextric C2451 1969 Camaro TransAm car, white

No. 5.  Scalextric C2451 1969 Camaro TransAm car, white.  The first and still the only pre-1970 Camaro TA car.  In all its many liveries, including plain white, this car has to be a candidate for the best-selling car of the modern era despite the shortcomings of its body shape.  The all-white one has been the best selling version, not surprising given the popularity of custom painting.

Scalextric C2595 Ford Taurus #97 Sharpie

No. 4.  Scalextric C2595 Ford Taurus #97 Sharpie.  We had the foresight to pick up a zillion of these when they were in production and we have been selling them ever since.  The pre-COT NASCARs are getting harder to come by, but we still have them and they are still very popular with all the hobbyists who never liked the COT in all its permutations.

Scalextric C2650 Dallara IRL Dan Wheldon 2005 Indy 500 winner

No. 3.  Scalextric C2650 Dallara IRL Dan Wheldon 2005 Indy 500 winner.  We bought lots of these, too, just because it was an Indy 500 winner and we guessed it would be hard to go wrong with it.  Since Dan Wheldon’s unfortunate passing it has become even more in demand – certainly not a circumstance we would have wished for but still a prime example of how events can affect the market for slot cars.

Monogram 85-4855 Greenwood Corvette

No. 2.  Monogram 85-4855 Greenwood Corvette.  The Monogram Greenwood Corvettes are a curious phenomenon.  The Greenwood “Batmobile” is a car you would shoot an on-track video of and then put it on You Tube with a Two Steps From Hell track playing in the background.   It’s the all-time king of Corvettes, and Monogram’s models of it are gorgeously executed.  Not only that, but with a couple of simple tuning tweaks they are rocket fast on any kind of plastic track.  So, it always mystified us why we have been able to buy boatloads of them at bargain prices and pass the savings on to our customers.  We can’t believe they just didn’t sell to begin with.  We never had a problem moving them.  So, we can only guess that either Revellogram grossly overestimated the market or some employee accidentally typed an extra zero into the quantity box on the order to the factory in China.

And finally…

Monogram 85-4857 Greenwood Corvette

No.1Monogram 85-4857 Greenwood Corvette.  Yup, another Monogram Greenwood.  Aside from its looks and legendary history, what makes this slot car cool is that it really is easy to make into a great performer.  The key is those ginormously wide rear tires.  You just true them up, remove the stock magnet, and glue an aftermarket bar magnet to the bottom of the chassis just forward of the rear axle, and the car corners like a banshee without being so stuck down you don’t have to drive it.  You don’t even need aftermarket tires.  It’s a blast to drive on our Scalextric Sport track.  If you don’t have one of these cars — or two or three or six — you owe it to yourself.  And you can’t beat the price.

And a bonus– the Number One seller of all the products on our web site:

Scalextric C8205 - Standard Straight 350mm, pk. of 2

Scalextric C8205 – Standard Straight 350mm, pk. of 2.   The basic building block of countless racing layouts.

Coming from Ostorero

Ostorero has announced this new project, a generic F1 car that comes only in plain white but with decal sheets for all the F1 liveries available separately so you can create your own Grand Prix field with all the various teams represented.  This is an idea somebody should have run with a long time ago.  F1 cars all look so much alike that if you took one of each, painted them solid white, and parked them side-by-side only a small percentage of F1 fans would be able to tell them apart.  By producing only a single generic car Ostorero keeps tooling costs low.  This should mean a low unit price for the cars while allowing them to be equipped with high-end wheels, gears, and other components, as well as built-in competitive parity.  Those who want to go the extra mile and modify the generic body to more closely resemble specific F1 cars should find the car an excellent starting point for their efforts.  There is no word yet on pricing and other details but the cars are said to be scheduled for production in 2 to 3 months.  We will publish more information as it becomes available.

Autoart drive shaft assemblies

We get requests from customers for drive shaft assemblies of various lengths for front-motor and 4 wheel-drive cars, either as replacement parts or to complete a front-motor scratchbuild project.  We have now received all the drive shaft assemblies made by Autoart for their various cars, which gives us a selection of 2mm shaft assemblies with shaft lengths from 19mm to 56mm.  Each assembly includes the shaft, shaft bushing, pinion gear, and coupling spring.  These drive shafts can be used with all the motors we sell except the FF configuration, which has a 1.5mm shaft, and you could even use them with an FF if you sleeve the motor shaft up to 2mm.  You can find them on our web site under Autoart Parts.
