MRRC MC11081 Porsche 911 #4, silver (C)

A basic 911 as raced in countless SCCA amateur races and the U2.5 division of the TransAm in many different liveries.

Technical specification includes Sebring chassis (Inline configuration), Universal guide, SportFix braids, 21k rpm SlimLine motor, ClipFit chassis magnet (can be moved to 2 alternative positions or removed), detailed wheels and tires, fully detailed body and interior including painted driver figure.

This car uses the MRRC/Monogram Sebring chassis. The Sebring chassis is an excellent universal 1/32 scale chassis for use with body kits and for kitbashig and scratchbuilding projects. It can be set up to handle well in both magnet and non-magnet racing. It has an adjustable wheelbase and is compact enough to fit almost any sports car, GT, or sedan body and to allow the use of wide wheels ad tires within even a relatively modest body width.

MRRC and Monogram cars using the Sebring chassis come with a variety of different wheels and tires. All of them use the same “slimline” motor which provides more than enough power for most home and club racing. They are ideal “donor cars” to provide a complete running chassis for the body of your choice at a cost often lower than purchasing the needed components separately.

Scalextric C3842 McLaren P1, Purple

The McLaren P1 is a limited production plug-in hybrid sports car by British manufacturer McLaren Automotive. The concept car debuted at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. Deliveries to retail customers began in the UK in October 2013. The entire P1 production of 375 units was sold out by November 2013. The production run ended in December 2015. It is considered to be the long-awaited successor to the McLaren F1, utilizing hybrid power and Formula 1 technology. It does not have the same three seat layout as its predecessor. The design of the headlights is very similar to the shape of the McLaren logo. Just like the McLaren F1 road car of 1992, the McLaren P1 is a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive design that uses a carbon fibre monocoque and roof structure safety cage concept called MonoCage, which is a development of the MonoCell used in the current MP4-12C and MP4-12C Spider upgrade that came out in early 2012.

Scalextric C3741 Ford XC Falcon – 1978 Bathurst 1000

Race: 1978 Hardie-Ferodo 1000

Driver: Allan Moffat & Jacky Ickx

Pushing for more television time, the 1978 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 saw the introduction of the Hardies Heroes Top 10 runoff for pole position. Rain in the morning meant the track was damp during the first run, which was certainly reflected in the times. That was until Allan Moffat went out and, ignoring the puddles, ran a time six seconds faster than anyone else (while hitting 159 mph on Conrod Straight).

Moffat was eventually pushed back to third and, unfortunately, the race didn’t go as planned. Allan was forced to retire on lap 81, allowing rival Peter Brock to take the victory.

Scalextric C3696 Legends Ford XY GT-HO Falcon, 1972 Bathurst

Rain was very much the theme for the 1972 Bathurst. John Goss sat behind the wheel of the Ford Falcon and, in practice, set the fastest lap time before blowing an engine. On the race day, with the engine changed, the rain continued to pour, which was unfortunate for the Falcons as they were not suited to driving in wet conditions. As the rain eased a dry line started to appear. Goss pushed the Falcon to its limit and started to close the gap to the cars ahead. Luck though, was not on Goss’s or the Falcon’s side when on lap 24 the strain on the car got too much and the engine blew for a second time.

While filming for “Le Mans” Piper crashed in his Porsche and lost part of his leg. However, Piper could never kick the racing habit and being a motor racing legend he saw no reason to take it easier: To this day David Piper has remained a rock-solid Ferrari enthusiast, running his own small-scale workshop in Surrey in which he has already built three complete Ferrari 330P4 replicas.

Monogram/Fly Lola T70 Kitbash

We build a Monogram Lola T70 the way Monogram should have built it to begin with

You may recall an article we did some time ago in which we corrected the principal shortcomings of the Monogram Lola T70.  We got the body down out of the stratosphere and solved the problem of insufficient clearance under the spur gear.

We not only made the car look better; we also turned it into a pretty decent runner.  Still, we couldn’t help thinking that the whole chassis should have been designed differently to begin with, especially in regard to the magnet installation.  What we really wanted was a car that would run with our highly successful modified Fly classic cars.  So, we thought, why not just put the Monogram Lola body on a Fly chassis?  It wouldn’t be the first time we had rebuilt a car around a Fly chassis.  We had previously done it with a Spirit Porsche 936, totally transforming the car.

We have lots of different chassis floating around the shop, including several of the Fly classics, so we took a body off a Monogram 85-4826 George Follmer Lola and began test fitting chassis to it.  The Fly Ferrari 512S chassis, we discovered, is a near-perfect fir for the Lola body.  It needed only some trimming at the front, a new body mount at the rear, and two new front mounts to match the position of the body’s front mounting posts to look like body and chassis were made for each other.  The chassis also needed a very slight change in the wheelbase, but we noticed that both the front and rear wheels fell withing the body’s wheel openings, just not quite centered.  So, instead of cutting up the chassis we decided to do a little work on the rear wheel openings instead, moving the center of the rear wheel openings slightly aft to accommodate the wheelbase of the chassis.

Here you see what we’ve done to alter the rear wheel openings.  We CA glued in pieces of strip styrene and used a Moto-tool to shape them to the desired configuration.  We have made the wheel opening smaller; it fits more snugly around the rear tires while still giving adequate clearance.

With the trimming, filling, and sanding done and a coat of paint on the body this is how it looks.  The wheels and tires are spares for a Fly BMW 3.5CSL.

The Fly Ferrari chassis shown here with the new rear body mount made from sheet styrene and mounted by drilling the screw hole for securing the motor pod to the chassis and using a 4-40 machine screw and nut.  You can also see the new front body mounts, made from styrene tubing, as well as our standard Fly classic car modifications – replacing the stock gears with Scalextric ones and notching the pod to accept a bar magnet in place of the original cylindrical magnet.  The blue tape around the magnet serves to make the magnet a tight fit and also to allow the magnet to be shimmed up or down slightly to adjust magnetic downforce when equalizing the car’s performance with other cars for closer racing.  Also visible are the Slot It guide and the Pioneer 21K motor we swapped into the car.  Neither requires any modifications to install.  We had to cut a little out of the bottom of the interior tub to clear the magnet installation.  Note that the Fly BMW wheels and tires are wider at both front and rear than the original Monogram wheels.  Note also the trimming at the front of the chassis.  At this point all that needs to be done to complete the running chassis is to install lead wires and braid.

The pod modification for the bar magnet is seen here.  From left to right, the stock pod, the pod with the notch for the bar magnet cut into it, and the pod with the bar magnet in place.  This modification does not prevent the original cylindrical magnet from being swapped back in if desired, but you won’t want to.  Th bar magnet gives plenty of downforce with improved drivability. Note that the bar magnet is centered on the socket for the cylindrical magnet, which centers it on the car as a whole.

Here’s a closeup of the rear of the chassis showing the new body mount, the Scalextric gears, and the Pioneer motor.  Note how the body mount is shaped to fit snugly into the pod so it can’t move when the nut is tightened down.  The asymmetrical design of the pod places the mounting holes in the correct position to line up with the body posts.

The body and interior are completely stock except for removing a bit of material from under the left side of the carburetor detail to clear the endbell and a little trimming of the bottom edge of the radiator air outlet to clear the top of the guide post, as well as the mod to the interior tub described above. We did replace the driver’s head with one in a full-face helmet.  Overall body color is Testor Boyd’s True Blue Pearl Metallic over pale gray primer.   We made the Kitt’y’s Guns and Ammo, Kalashnikitty, and ASR decals on an HP Photosmart inkjet printer.  The rest of the decals are odds and ends from our decal box.  The BBS wheels, wider tires, and the full-face driver’s helmet give the car the look of a Lola being campaigned in Sports Car Club of America amateur racing in the 70s or 80s.  Such cars were always under continuing development with updated components throughout their active racing careers, and some raced into the 90s before being restored to their original specifications to begin a new life as vintage racers.

The Fly chassis as we have modified it makes the Lola quick, good-handling, and drivable on our Scalextric Sport track, even with the stock Fly tires.  Available aftermarket tires will give it even m,ore grip.   Monogram Lola bodies are available separately on the the Electric Dreams web site so you don’t need to buy a whole car to get the body.

We’re beginning to accumulate quite a nice field of CanAm/A Sports Racing cars.  Row 1: Carrera McLaren M20 and Porsche 917-30. Row 2: Kitbashed McLaren M12 and Carrera Lola 222.  Row 3: Lola T70 on Fly chassis and lowered Monogram Lola T70.  Row 4: GB Track Porsche 917PA and lowered Monogram McLaren M6A. Row 5: Fly Porsche 908 and kitbashed Cooper-Chevy (modified Monogram Cooper-Cobra.)

It’s new product announcement time!

First off the line is Scalextric, with a 2012 product range that includes, among many others, these three US-exclusive cars…

Scalextric C3323 Dodge Charger, Bobby Allison. We don’t yet know if this represents a newly tooled body with all the changes from their Charger road car that would be needed to make a proper stock car model.  It could be another road car painted up as a race car in the same vein as the embarrassing Scalextric “Junie Donlavey” Torino that was the Starsky and Hutch car painted up like a race car but otherwise a road car.  The changes needed to make a proper model of Allison’s race car are extensive, starting with the race car being the Charger 500 with the “fastback” window while Scalextric’s road Charger is the standard version with the nearly vertical rear window.  And that’s just one of many differences.  We really hope Scalextric gets this one right.

Click here to download the entire release list ==>

C3324 Ford GT40 P1075, Gulf,  as driven by David Hobbs and Mike Hailwood to second place in the 1969 Daytona 24 Hours.

C3325 Ford GT road car painted in 60s Gulf colors.  Our first reaction to this one was “Why?”, but we have actually seen one of these on the street and it doesn’t look half bad in Gulf blue and orange, so it may turn out to be fairly popular.

We’ll have these three cars up for preorder shortly and the full 2012 Scalextric lineup as soon as we can get proper product pages prepared for them.  Meanwhile, you can see the list HERE.  It appears that the new price point for a Scalextric standard-issue (not high-impact or limited edition) car is going to be $52.99.  The new releases from the main 2012 product line most likely to be of interest to US hobbyists include:

C3258 Camaro in retro-Sunoco livery (there is actually a car like this running in a US race series).

C3289 Camaro, Stevenson Racing, GrandAm GT series.

C3291 Lola Coupe LMP from Gregg Pickett’s 2011 ALMS effort.

C3317 Dodge Charger.  does the blower look oversized to you?

The Ozzophiles among us will salivate over this one…

C3303 Ford Falcon (Australian) as driven by Allan Moffat after his fabled Boss Mustang reached the end of its road. Nice opponent for the Holden.

And then there’s this…

Yep, a mid-70s Camaro ,in particular the one from the Transformers movie.  Unfortunately, it won’t be distributed in the US, most likely because Scalextric didn’t want to cough up the fee for the US license.  Okay, they aren’t gong to sell this here, but you’d think that they could have made one of their US exclusives a TransAm/IMSA version of it, like this one, maybe…

This would sell better than the C3325 retro-Ford GT.  Well, maybe next year.  BTW, this car isn’t all that far from this…

A gen-you-wine IROC Camaro.  All they would need to add is some fender flares and a hood hump. Some of you will want one of Scalextric’s cars to build your own IROC car from, and you will pay through the nose for one from an overseas dealer.  We have a better suggestion.  For just a few bucks you can still get Revell/Monogram’s snap kit of a 70s Camaro, and it’s a perfect fit for an unmodified Pioneer Mustang chassis or a Scalextric 70 Camaro chassis with a little trimming at the front end.

More info on the whole Scalextric line to come as we receive it and put it on the site.

Customers should account for 2 handling business days before order is shipped ( We almost always ship in 1 day but we’re being careful) and their distance from Los Angeles. You can use the www.UPS.com time and cost calculator to see the expected delivery date based on shipment date.  If you have special needs please call our warehouse at (310) 676-7600 or e-mail shop@electricdreams.com for further information.

Pioneer does it again!

We just got word from Pioneer Models that their Dukes of Hazzard General Lee Charger is close to production, and the news comes with a BIG surprise!

Pioneer P016 General Lee Charger. Preorder now!

Yep!  coming at the same time will be a Hazzard County Dodge Monaco police car!

The cop car will have good ol’ Roscoe behind the wheel and his hound dog riding shotgun.  Let the chase begin!

YEEEEEE -HAAAAAAAH!

No word yet on stock number or price for the police car but we will have it up for preorder soon.

You can bet that the Hazzard County car will be just the first in a series of movie and TV show police cars, since the Dodge Monaco was the standard police cruiser both in real life and in the movies for a long, long time.  We have it on good authority that there will also be state and city police cars from all over the US as time goes on, though no plans beyond the DOH car have been firmed up as yet.

Carrera 30563 Ferrari 599XX, yellow, D132 – $53.39

Carrera 30564 Ferrari 599XX, silver-grey, D132

Carrera 30564 Ferrari 599XX, silver-grey, D132 – $53.39. Yes, we know it looks like flat gray primer but actually, the effect is rather striking in a bad-boy kind of way.

Carrera 30565 Ferrari 458, silver, D132

Carrera 30565 Ferrari 458, silver, D132 – $53.39

Carrera 30575 Opel GT, red/black, D132

Carrera 30575 Opel GT, red/black, D132 – $53.39. We’ve always thought the Opel GT looks like the runt in a litter of C3 Corvettes, but Carrera’s model, with the fat tires and flared fenders, needs only a wing on the back to look like a poor man’s Greenwood Corvette

Carrera 40013 Ferrari Formula 1 race set, Digital 143

Carrera 40013 Ferrari Formula 1 race set, Digital 143 – $166.69. Your formula one-literate grade schoolers can fight over who gets to be Alonso and who is stuck being Massa.  But once they get past that hurdle and get on with racing there’s lots of digital racing fun at low cost.

New from MRRC

Well, friends, it looks like MRRC’s new owners have the resources to get new products out in a much shorter time frame and meet projected release dates.  Here are the first two under the new regime…

MRRC MC11031 Ford MkIV, #3 LeMans 1967. – $63.99

MRRC MC11032 Ford MkIV, #4 LeMans 1967

Ninco 50556 Renault Megane Trophy green/yellow

Ninco 50577 Ford Focus WRC

Ninco 50577 Ford Focus WRC “dirt effect” – $69.99. Ninco appears to be taking up SCX’s penchant for modeling dirty rally cars.  What somebody needs to invent is a slot car that gets progressively dirtier over the course of a race and then reverts to clean for the next one.

Ninco 50584 Classic Corvette, "speed record"

Ninco 50584 Classic Corvette, “speed record”.  $79.99.  Or paint it black and have a sort of B-movie Batmobile.

Slot Classic CJ37 OSCA MT4. Alfonso DePortago 1954 – $349.99. Cars like this aren’t for everyone, but if you enjoy hand-crafted works of art the Slot classic models are worth the price.

Slot It SICA19A Toyota 88C #98, Daytona 1989

Slot It SICA19A Toyota 88C #98, Daytona 1989. – $64.99. Slot It offers a combinations of scale authenticity and performance that’s very hard to beat..  For best handling on a plastic track use a pair of 19mm silicones slicks and the racing magnet.

Just for fun…

Fiat 124 project

We’re big fans of SCCA club racing around here.  you will probably have noticed that many of our kitbash projects have been aimed at creating cars, real or mythical, that raced or could have raced for a national championship in one of the SCCA’s many club racing classes.  They have included numerous A-Sedan (TransAm type) Mustangs and Camaros as well as a Javelin and a Pontiac GTO.  We have also done or are in process with a McLaren M12 and our “Super Cooper” both A-Sports Racing cars.  We’ve done several A-production Corvettes, a Cobra, and even a mythical production class Ferrari GTO roadster.  Our eventual goal is to create two SCCA race groups, a big-bore sports-racing, production, and sedan group and one for smaller production cars and sedans, each with about 40 cars.  We also want to do a GT1 grid for more modern tube-frame cars.

We’re fairly well along with out big-bore grid but just starting out on the lesser game.  We’ve chosen, for our first small-bore kitbash, to take one of these…

An SCX Fiat 124 rally car and turn it into something like this…

or like this…

In SCCA racing the Fiat 124 has raced in the E-production or F-production classes for many years.  Individual cars have undergone extensive development and some of them are really cool-looking race cars.

Here’s where we are so far with ours.

We have cut the top off and cut out most of the interior, leaving the model’s original roll cage, which will be retained for our project.  I’s a bit crooked in this photo but it will be straightened and modified before we are done. We also removed the entire lighting system from the car.

We have also begun to return the hood to a more stock appearance by cutting off the housings for the extra driving lights found on the rally car. You can see, too, that we have replaced the original wheels with Minilites from a Scalextric TransAm car with the original Scalextric tires turned don to a smaller diameter suitable for a smaller car. Other than the wheels and tires we have retained the original SCX chassis and mechanicals unchanged, though we will eventually see what we can do to enhance its performance if needed.

We picture this car as racing with Scalextric and Pioneer MGBs, Fly and Autoart Alfa Romeo sedans, Scalextric Caterham Sevens, Scalextric and Revell Cortinas, classic Minis from several sources, Fly Classic BMW 320i’s, Carrera BMW 2002s, and most of the Ninco classic cars, as well as kitbashes of similar cars from resin or model kit bodies and probably many other RTR cars we can’t immediately think of.

We’ll be keeping you updated on this project as we go along.
