Video – Slot Cars at the Peterson – Episode 4

Slot Cars at the Peterson Automotive Museum Episode 4 features Slot Car Racing Legends John Cukras and Mike Steube.

American slot car racing legend John Cukras (pronounce “Soo-Krees”) did much to glorify pro-racing when this car won the first Car Model magazine series race in 1967.  A story in Rod Custom, illustrated by the famous Tom Daniel who designed many of the Monogram plastic kits, opened the eyes of thousands of young Americans on slot car racing. A subsequent story by celebrated writer, the late Leon Mandel, made John Cukras’s name a household commodity at the time.

1966 is the year John really made his mark, winning the first East-West confrontation in Memphis, TN, with the help of another race-driver, Mike Steube. They effectively defeated all what the East, Midwest and South could throw at them. And we have them here!

It was was an amazing day at the Peterson Automobile Museum in Los Angeles on July 24th, 2010. We were witnessing what may very well have been the largest assortment of Slot Car Tracks in one place ever!

Put together by the Farrout Slot Car Club, sponsored by all the big Slot Car Manufacturers and benefiting MSFriends – all in all, we had an amazing day!

Here is Episode 3 of our Slot Car Adventure at the Peterson Automotive Museum. This episode features the legendary and ever so humble Keith Tanaka. Keith has been racing since the 60’s. He took a bit of a hiatus – but is really one of the “old timers” who are responsible for the Slot Car resurgence.

Listen in as we chat with Keith about a little slot car history.

Well, Slot Cars at the Peterson Auto Museum Episode 2 is here. This episode features Stephen Farr-Jones of the Farrout Slot Racing Club. Interestingly enough, the event was masterminded by Stephen & the Farrout Slot Racing Club. Not only did he manage to get a mind boggling 13 (or 14) tracks in one place, he also managed to get the event sponsored by all the big manufactures (and us too)! It was a fun time. Now let’s have a chat with Stephen Farr-Jones of the Farrout Slot Racing Club.

So how did a Slot Car Exhibit make it into the Peterson Auto Museum any way? One way is to make it a charitable event. Here in the very first episode of Slot Cars at the Peterson, we chat with Amelia Davis, the President of MS Friends – the charity behind this cool event.

Catalog this post under more cool stuff from the Peterson Auto Museum!

We’ve just discovered that the slot car exhibit at the Peterson Auto Museum has received coverage online from Road and Track Magazine! We couldn’t be more excited. Thanks to the news getting out, on our local NPR station and getting a little coverage on Local news (ABC 7) – we had a blogger from Road and Track Mag show up at the event.

Here’s a bit of what they wrote:

Sometimes a special event can sneak up on you. I heard on the radio that the FarrOut Slot Car Club and charity organization MSFriends were getting together with the Peterson Automotive Museum to bring attention to two often neglected causes: Multiple Sclerosis and Slot Cars. They had me at the slot cars. The proceeds from the event would go to MSFriends, a 24/7 support helpline, staffed by people who themselves have Multiple Sclerosis. Good clean fun for a good cause! I’ll dedicate some of any Saturday to thirteen tracks (some absolutely staggering in their complexity and detail) and a vintage slot car museum.
