LeMay Museum TransAm race update

More info just received from the race organizers…

The museum is very serious about developing a series of top-quality slot car events. ACM is a world-class car museum and it wants its slot car races to be of the same quality. The race in October will be the first of many to come. However, they want to be sure people understand that because this is a first event for them and very much a learning experience for their staff they have purposely taken a simple, conservative approach to it in terms of race organization, rules, and objectives. They want this event to be easy for them to organize and carry out as well as easy and inexpensive for hobbyists to build cars for and enter. Above all, they want it to be fun for the participants and for the museum visitors who will be watching. They are starting on a modest level and building experience toward organizing more ambitious events to come.

The type of cars to be run at this event, Scalextric and Pioneer TransAm cars, was chosen for several reasons:

1. There are many of them around and just about everybody in the hobby has at least one.

2. They all use the same spec tire and most of the parts are interchangeable among them.

3. They are relatively inexpensive cars, making it affordable for racers.

4. They offer significant event sponsorship possibilities (watch for announcements)

5. The Pioneer and Scalextric cars are very close in performance and both will be competitive.

The modified class rules are designed to allow room for creativity and ingenuity on the part of entrants while keeping the cars relatively simple and inexpensive to build. If you have one each of a Pioneer and a Scalextric TA car you have all the parts needed to build a winning modified class car, and after the race you can put the parts back on their original cars and you will have spent essentially nothing for parts. In short, just about anybody is in with a chance to win.

Later on there will be race events for cars with aftermarket parts, non-magnet cars, scratchbuilt cars, vintage cars, and, over time, cars that model just about every kind of car in motorsports history. But for this first event they want to keep it simple and within the technical and financial reach of everybody who might want to enter. There will even be some cars, prepared to the stock class rules, for sale at the museum for anybody who just wants to “arrive and drive”.

ACM hopes that many racers from the Northwest corner of the country (and other areas, too) will attend the event in person and that more will enter by mail. The goal is for the greatest number of people to show up and have fun.

Don’t forget that each on-site entrant gets a museum pass good for entry from Friday evening through Sunday so everyone can come back the day after the race and explore the museum at leisure. You will enjoy the exhibits, which cover an amazing range of cars from the entire history of the automobile. Exhibits are rotated frequently, so you never know what you might see.

Alan Smith confirms that the receiving and return of mail-in entries will be through his Scaleracing warehouse. Full details for mail-in entrants will be published soon.

Any slot car business, including retailers, distributors, and manufacturers, who would like to participate in event sponsorship by providing prizes is welcome to do so. Also, teams sponsored by slot car businesses are welcome to enter. All participating businesses will be acknowledged by the organizers wherever possible.

Anyone needing information can e-mail to slotcarevent@lemaymuseum.org. We will also be keeping an eye on the forums and will reply to questions or comments posted on them.

Carrera McLaren M20 project – the journey continues…

Last time we completed the mating of the TSRF rear pod to the Carrera McLaren M20 chassis, converting the car into a sidewinder.  Here’s how the chassis looks now.

In this photo you can see the lead wires in place.  They were cut from a meter-long piece of silicone-insulated lead wire we keep on hand for projects like this.  Our web site sells silicone lead wire from many different manufacturers.  To find them just type the words lead wire into our site’s search engine.  This photo also shows the brass washers we glued onto the rear body mounts to raise the rear of the body back up enough to clear the TSRF motor installation.  The washers are temporary.  Later we’ll add some length back into the body posts.   You can also see the sanded rear tires (which need to be sanded a bit more).  The front tires have been turned down about 1/16″ to make the front of the car sit lower.  That’s about all you can take off without cutting into the lettering on the sidewall.   If you don’t care about that they could stand to be taken down a bit more to get the front edge of the body even lower.

We also did some work on the interior tray.  We like the intake manifold/injector trumpet detail incorporated into it, but with the new motor arrangement it’s too thick to let the body sit at a proper height.  So…

We removed the roll bar and driver figure.  Then we cut the tray apart at the rear of the cockpit.  We then cut the intake manifold detail out of the rear part of the tray that we had just removed and then glued it to a rectangle of .020″ sheet styrene.  The little triangle snipped off one corner is to clear a contour on the underside of the body.  The hole in the styrene rectangle is for the roll bar’s rear brace.

We drilled out the broken-off mounting pins of the original plastic injector stacks, which are too fragile.  Into each hole we CA glued a piece of 1/16″ wire-filled tubing.    Using them as a very secure and sturdy mounting we CA glued a Parma #622 International 32 front axle spacer over each one. The result as shown at right above, is an engine intake detail assembly that is much more survivable than the original.  We’ll paint the whole assembly before we’re done.

Here’s the car, put together for testing with the interior and engine detail temporarily taped in place and the body sides not yet put back on.  You can see that it’s really starting to come together. The TSRF FK130 motor we’re using is, as we suspected, too much motor for the power we want the car to be able to run on, a stock Scalextric power pack on each lane.  We know from experience it will eventually heat up the Scalextric pack enough to pop its internal circuit breaker. But for the moment it serves for testing, despite its 2-amp draw from rest.  We’ll replace it with a better-suited motor before we’re done.

The car still has too much magnet but it is much more drivable, even with the stock Monogram Greenwood tires on it.  Silicones will come a bit later.  As of now we’ve just had time to give the car some shakedown laps to see if everything is staying in place and all the moving parts are turning freely.  It’s looking good, though we will still have to look for a way to get the magnetic downforce lower.  More about magnets in the next installment.

Kyosho Dslot 43 now in stock

We now have Kyosho Dslot 43 1/43 scale slot cars and the first Dslot 43 race set in stock and available for ordering.  We also have most of the parts in stock and will have them on the web site shortly.  At present, according to Kyosho USA, there are no track sections in the US yet but they are coming.

Kyosho 30204 Porsche 917 1970 LeMans winner, 1/43 scale

We recently tested a Kyosho 30204 Porsche 917, the model of the 1970 LeMans winner, on our Scalextric Sport track.   We found it to be a very well-made car, as you would expect from a 1/43 scale car that sells for $50.  It’s a whole level or two above the quality and performance of the Carrera and SCX 1/43 scale cars we sell.   On our track, right out of the box it was quiet, smooth, and faster than any other 1/43 scale car we have ever driven.  Like other 1/43 scale cars it is well stuck down by its traction magnet.  This will not please the non-mag crowd, but for the other 98% of users it makes the car easy yet fun to drive with high limits, yet not so totally stuck down at to prevent a certain degree of tail-out cornering.  The Kyosho cars will be very confidence-building for beginners and children, making them excellent Christmas present material.  The chassis looks like it will make an excellent platform for resin bodies and other conversions.  The bodies are also available for those who want a very nice body to put onto a 1/43 scale scratchbuilt chassis.

More about Kyosho in a coming edition of this newsletter.

Pioneer Camaro release now scheduled for December

Prototype photos released

Pioneer recently released these photos of an unpainted ’68 Camaro prototype.  the car uses the exact same chassis and running gear as the Pioneer Mustangs and will offer the same performance.  A vast effort, including multiple redesigns, went into getting the Camaro’s shape and details to look right in 1/32 scale.  The first Camaros are now scheduled for release in December.

Along with the release of the prototype photos, Pioneer announced that the P011 Alan Green Chevrolet car and the P018 Penske car will be limited editions of just 624 each.

Pioneer also announced several new Camaro liveries:

P033 Camaro 44 orange, standard production run.

P041 67 Camaro #96, Warren Fairbanks, standard production run

P042 Stealth Camaro 427SS.  limited edition of 427 units, nationwide.

We will have these on line for preorder shortly.

And then there are these…

The white one is P035 in pearl white metallic, 50 total worldwide.  the red one is P026 in ruby red, 110 total worldwide.  These will be doled out in ones and twos to dealers who order certain minimum quantities of the other Camaros.

Pioneer Models update

We’ve all been waiting for hard news about the future plans of Pioneer Models, which has been going through a long, difficult process of establishing its own factory after having too many bad experiences with contractor factories in China.   We have it on good authority from Pioneer USA that the first shipments of cars from the new factory are expected to arrive on these shores sometime in October..  These should be the first of the new and much anticipated Camaro models.  Pioneer says that with the entire manufacturing process under its own control, from initial research to final distribution it will be able to bring out new models much more quickly.  The Legends cars and the 1971 Javelin are expected to follow the Camaro in rapid succession.  Meanwhile, Pioneer is now showing on its web site the first official drawing of the Chevy Legends car.

We will pass on to you any additional information as we receive it.  For now, however, the end of the long drought of Pioneer cars is in sight, for which we can all rejoice.  Electric Dreams wishes Julian Birley and all the gang at Pioneer all success and we congratulate them upon the imminent completion of their new factory.

New NSR 2mm axles, bushings, and gears.

NSR has released and we have received 2mm diameter axles along with bushings and spacers to fit them.  Apparently, the level of competition in European racing has reached the point where reducing the axle diameter by .4mm or so is worth the effort for even the tiny incremental weight reduction this allows.  NSR has also released a line of very lightweight plastic spur gears with metal hubs for both 2mm and 3/32″ axles, but there have been immediate reports of these gears failing due to improper design.  We received a shipment of these gears but we will not be putting them on line for sale until we are certain the problem is resolved.  We may end up returning all of them for replacement with improved gears.
