Second Nostalgia Can-Am Race

De Lespinay reels Anderson in a thrilling battle.

Akiyama over Aguirre in the "B" race.

The second Nostalgia Can-Am Championship Race was hosted by Chris and Lenore Gallegos on the old King track, days before it was dismantled and replaced by a new Gerding-built track.

Qualifying

Tore Anderson could not get his car to work, so he borrowed one from Mike Steube and topped the sheets, edging Adam Friedman by just over three hundreds of a second. Gil Gunderson was third with Philippe de Lespinay taking the 4th spot with his Steube car. Mike Steube could not get it all quite together in 5th place, while Paul Sterrett could not quite get the last tenth from his new car.

Yoshio Akiyama's Steube car was another perfect and very fast RTR. Fitted with the MAC Lola body, it qualified in 9th place and was a contender all day. Yoshio won the "B" main over Mike Aguirre.

Philippe's chassis is standard, over-the-counter Mike Steube fare. Simple and so far very efficient. The gear is a 40-year old Cox unit. Body is a MAC Lola T160. Mike put the car together and Philippe added the lead weight. This is one of the heaviest cars running the class at 142 grams.

Best finished and detailed car belonged to Dennis Samson. This MAC Lola is painted as the 1967 Surtees car in the Can-Am series. Dennis ran into poor luck and ended 7th in the "B" Main.

Dennis's car is superb and a perfect representation of what the rules are calling for.

The Races:

"B" Main:

The "B" main saw Yoshio Akiyama locked in a tough battle with Mike Aguirre. At the end, a bit over a lap separated the two. Scott Bader used a loaner car from Mike Steube to carefully circulate in third place in his third slot car race ever after leading the first two segments. Behind those three, John Sinz was all by himself in fourth place, while Warmack and Easterly fought for fifth place honors. Bryan edged Jeff by a lap. Dennis Samson was in agony with a slower car and Ken Dalke called it quits after a mechanical failure at lap 75.

"A" Main:

The "A" main began with Paul Sterrett putting a lap over Philippe, Gil, Adam and Mike Steube locked in a one-lap battle. In the second heat, Steube got the lead by one over Philippe, Gil, Tore and Paul a lap behind. Mike Kravitz was hanging there another lap in the minus. Dennis Hill was having problems and his car was handling unpredictably. Mike Steube led the next segment barely a lap over Tore, Gil, Philippe and Mike Kravitz all in the same lap. Paul's motor began to slow down and he lost 3 laps. Adam was in mortal agony as well as Dennis. Tore took the lead from Steube and Philippe in the next heat with Gil a lap behind, Kravitz still hanging there 4 laps behind. Things got hotter in the next heat with Tore one lap over the Checkpoint duo of Mike and Philippe, Gil now 3 laps in arrears and one over Mike Kravitz. Then Philippe took over the lead for good over Tore and Mike, Gil having problems and losing 3 laps on the leaders. The last segment saw Philippe stretching his lead to a mere 2 laps, ending weeks of online controversy and by so, humbling Tore Anderson's pre-race predictions. Gil ended in 3rd after Mike Steube ran into marshaling problems, losing 5 laps in the process. Paul Sterrett soldiered on in 6th place after a motor change, edging Adam K.
